Postcards from Africa

Postcards from Africa, was a project that evolved out of four months of travel and filming across Africa. A journey shaped by beauty, fragility and determination. Along the way, Ali wrote on old postcards found early on in Kenyan markets and bookshops. These became quiet notes, that traced her passage into Sudan where she lived and filmed with the SPLA (Sudanese Peoples Liberation Army) The postcards became an essential conversation with the film she was making.

Later, long after the journey ended, the written post cards expanded into a much larger text from poetic field notes, to emotional archaeology of a filmmaker. An act of witness, of movement, and of writing often from somewhere between exhaustion, fear and wonder.
